Shortly after the turn of 1700, Henry Bristol immigrated to America from England. After reaching America he settled in New Haven, Connecticut and married Lydia Brown. Henry grew up on a fruit farm in England, and once in America, he continued to grow tree fruits and was also a cooper. Henry and Lydia had multiple children and the family stayed in Connecticut farming for over 100 years.
In 1827, the Bristol family moved from Connecticut to Michigan, and were the second settlers in the area now known as the town of Almont. Once in Almont, the Bristol family continued to farm tree fruits, vegetables, and livestock.
In 1910, William Howard Bristol purchased the property that is now known as Brookwood Fruit Farm. The farm consisted of fruit trees, woods, and a brook that runs through the woods, hence the name Brookwood Fruit Farm.
William Howard sold the farm in 1912 to his son WK Bristol. WK turned the farm into a full scale production fruit farm that specialized in wholesaleing high quality apples, cherries, and peaches, as well as other vegetables and tree fruits.
By the mid 1960s, the farm was passed on to WK's son, William James (Bill), where he continued to grow high quality fruit for the wholesale market.
Then in 1988, Bill's son Charles took over the farm, and shifted the focus of the farm out of the wholesale business and into the retail market. With the help of his father, Charles continues to own and operate all aspects of the farm to this day.
We are a family farm that takes pride in offering our guests quality fruit and a memorable experience. Come and join us to see what has made Brookwood Fruit Farm unique for nearly 100 years.
